Lee Beng Chuan
83 Years Old, born in 1928
Traditional Handmade Joss Stick Maker
Born in Penang
Making joss stick and selling outside of his house
Had been interview by a lot of magazines, newspaper and even showed up in Discovery Channel.
His Story:
His story started when he was studying in Han Chiang Primary School. When studying half way, Japan came to our country. He had to stop studied because of the war. At the age of 12, he and his mother had to constantly seek shelter from danger. After the war ended, because of financial problem, he can’t proceed his study. So he decided to start a small business. He saw people in the temple making joss stick, this catch his attention and he is interested in it. But no people willing to teach him how to make joss stick, so he observe and learn everything all by himself. He is his own master, he experiment himself on making joss stick. Through many trial and errors, he finally master the skill. His joss stick is different than the factory made joss stick, his ingredients consist of mainly sandalwoods powder. This is why his joss stick will give out a fragrant smell when burned. His joss stick is more expensive instead because of his ingredients, and also because of his joss stick is handmade. Making joss stick can’t make a living for him, as most of the people will choose to buy the factory made joss stick. And he can’t compete with the factory mass production. At his age of 81, he is requested by Teochew Association to make a 12 foot tall dragon joss stick. The joss stick is use for the celebration for the Han Chiang Teochew Ancestral Temple (which functioned as Han Chiang School before the war) during Chinese New Year. He accepts the offer since he knows this might be his last dragon joss stick. He feels very happy as he don’t know he will have the chance to contribute to his old school. But due to his old age, he know that he will face some difficulties when making this dragon joss stick. 12 foot height is too high and dangerous for and old man likes him. So he seeks for help from a joss stick factory in Penang. The boss of the factory asks one of his top workers to assist him in making the dragon joss stick. Both of them start to make the joss stick pillar. The joss stick pillar requires 3 layers since it has to be thick and strong. After making the pillar, Mr. Lee has to make the dragon sculpture on it. He took out his dragon sculpture he made when he is young, he observe them and reimprove them. At last, the dragon joss stick had success and in time for the festival. He is satisfy and very happy because he know that this will be the last dragon joss stick in his life. Until today, Mr. Lee still making joss stick outside of his house. He enjoys talking about his story, showing of his traditional crafting skill to the visitor. He said he will keep on making joss stick until the end of his life

Final Design

Artwork Title: A Day To My Own
Artist Statement:
This artwork is based on the poem “A Day To My Own” by Lady Moore-Sabb. The poem is about the author is so tired of her daily duty and responsibilities, she just hope for a day that she can take a break and do things that she wants to. I use a tea cup as a metaphor for taking a break, tea cup carry the meaning of having a tea break. And for the glasses, it is a metaphor of having rest as when most of us rest, we took off our glasses. For the closed book, it is a metaphor of stop working. With these three visual objects combined, it carry a strong meaning that someone had decided to stop on his work and just want to have a good rest. At the right bottom of design, there is a door opened. This opened door is the symbols or metaphor of someone had left the house. He left the house without closing and locks the door; he did not even wash his cup. This is the metaphor that he does not care about all his responsibilities, he just wants to be free and do whatever he wants to. The eye flow of the design is from the objects on the table and then slowly moves to the door at behind. I make the objects on the table sharp so that they are more dominant and audience will focus on them first. I used a strong bold black font in order to create a strong meaning that the person wants to have a day on his own. Besides that, I use a yellowish tone for this design. The yellow color creates a warm feeling for the design, this is to show that the person can finally have and break and relax comfortably. Other than that, yellow is a sign of hope too. This is to show that the author of the poem is hoping to have a break, if she can really have a break; then she does not have to write this poem. So with the yellow color, it creates a feeling of hope for the design. The hope to have a day on my own.
