Final Design

Artwork Title: A Day To My Own
Artist Statement:
This artwork is based on the poem “A Day To My Own” by Lady Moore-Sabb. The poem is about the author is so tired of her daily duty and responsibilities, she just hope for a day that she can take a break and do things that she wants to. I use a tea cup as a metaphor for taking a break, tea cup carry the meaning of having a tea break. And for the glasses, it is a metaphor of having rest as when most of us rest, we took off our glasses. For the closed book, it is a metaphor of stop working. With these three visual objects combined, it carry a strong meaning that someone had decided to stop on his work and just want to have a good rest. At the right bottom of design, there is a door opened. This opened door is the symbols or metaphor of someone had left the house. He left the house without closing and locks the door; he did not even wash his cup. This is the metaphor that he does not care about all his responsibilities, he just wants to be free and do whatever he wants to. The eye flow of the design is from the objects on the table and then slowly moves to the door at behind. I make the objects on the table sharp so that they are more dominant and audience will focus on them first. I used a strong bold black font in order to create a strong meaning that the person wants to have a day on his own. Besides that, I use a yellowish tone for this design. The yellow color creates a warm feeling for the design, this is to show that the person can finally have and break and relax comfortably. Other than that, yellow is a sign of hope too. This is to show that the author of the poem is hoping to have a break, if she can really have a break; then she does not have to write this poem. So with the yellow color, it creates a feeling of hope for the design. The hope to have a day on my own.

Research on the Topic
Rest may refer to:
1. Leisure
2. Human Relaxation
3. Sleep

Leisure, or free time, is time spent away from business, work, and domestic chores. It is also the periods of time before or after necessary activities such as eating, sleeping and, where it is compulsory, education.
The distinction between leisure and unavoidable activities is loosely applied, i.e. people sometimes do work-oriented tasks for pleasure as well as for long-term utility. A distinction may also be drawn between free time and leisure. For example, Situationist International maintains that free time is illusory and rarely free; economic and social forces appropriate free time from the individual and sell it back to them as the commodity known as "leisure".
Leisure studies is the academic discipline concerned with the study and analysis of leisure.
Cultural Differences
Time for leisure varies from one society to the next, although anthropologists have found that hunter-gatherers tend to have significantly more leisure time than people in more complex societies. As a result, band societies such as the Shoshone of the Great Basin came across as extraordinarily lazy to European colonialists.
Workaholics are those who work compulsively at the expense of other activities. They prefer to work rather than spend time socializing and engaging in other leisure activities.

A relaxation technique (also known as relaxation training) is any method, process, procedure, or activity that helps a person to relax; to attain a stateof increased calmness; or otherwise reduce levels of anxiety, stress or anger. Relaxation techniques are often employed as one element of a wider stress management program and can decrease muscle tension, lower the blood pressure and slow heart and breath rates, among other health benefits.
Certain relaxation techniques known as "formal and passive relaxation exercises" are generally performed while sitting or lying quietly, with minimal movement and involve "a degree of withdrawal".These include:
§ Zen Yoga
§ Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Sleep is a naturally recurring state characterized by reduced or absent consciousness, relatively suspended sensory activity, and inactivity of nearly all voluntary muscles. It is distinguished from quiet wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, and is more easily reversible than being in hibernation or a coma. Sleep is also a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems. It is observed in all mammals, all birds, and many reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
The purposes and mechanisms of sleep are only partially clear and are the subject of intense research. Sleep is often thought to help conserve energy, but actually decreases metabolism only about 5–10%. Hibernating animals need to sleep despite the hypometabolism seen in hibernation, and in fact they must return from hypothermia to euthermy in order to sleep, making sleeping "energetically expensive."
