Artwork Title: A Day To My Own
Artist Statement:
This artwork is based on the poem “A Day To My Own” by Lady Moore-Sabb. The poem is about the author is so tired of her daily duty and responsibilities, she just hope for a day that she can take a break and do things that she wants to. I use a tea cup as a metaphor for taking a break, tea cup carry the meaning of having a tea break. And for the glasses, it is a metaphor of having rest as when most of us rest, we took off our glasses. For the closed book, it is a metaphor of stop working. With these three visual objects combined, it carry a strong meaning that someone had decided to stop on his work and just want to have a good rest. At the right bottom of design, there is a door opened. This opened door is the symbols or metaphor of someone had left the house. He left the house without closing and locks the door; he did not even wash his cup. This is the metaphor that he does not care about all his responsibilities, he just wants to be free and do whatever he wants to. The eye flow of the design is from the objects on the table and then slowly moves to the door at behind. I make the objects on the table sharp so that they are more dominant and audience will focus on them first. I used a strong bold black font in order to create a strong meaning that the person wants to have a day on his own. Besides that, I use a yellowish tone for this design. The yellow color creates a warm feeling for the design, this is to show that the person can finally have and break and relax comfortably. Other than that, yellow is a sign of hope too. This is to show that the author of the poem is hoping to have a break, if she can really have a break; then she does not have to write this poem. So with the yellow color, it creates a feeling of hope for the design. The hope to have a day on my own.
